Meet an Attorney
Rachel, Managing Attorney Legal Care Program
How long have you been practicing law?
I have been an attorney for 6 years. Prior to this, I was an inpatient blood and marrow transplant nurse at City of Hope and transplant coordinator at the Mayo Clinic. I saw the stress that so many of my patients faced in navigating issues outside of their diagnosis and how few resources there were to solve them; this motivated me to pursue a degree in law while working as a nurse.
Cancer Legal Care is a "dream job" for me and working here is really the perfect intersection of both of my nurse and attorney worlds. I feel privileged to have found a job where I can use my nurse's heart and compassion as an attorney.
Why did you want to work for CLC?
I love being part of the solution for people's questions. I love being able to be there for them when they reach out, to make people to feel heard in their stories and their difficult times and then to be able to help them navigate through their question. I know I am just one part of a larger story that our clients are working through, but I feel fortunate to be able to help them through and hopefully ease their stress.
What's your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is when I get to share good news with clients about an issue we've been working through together. A particularly memorable matter from this past year was when I helped a client with a young daughter get her life insurance policy reinstated. Being able to share such good news with clients and know the impact it has made is a highlight of my job!
What do you want people to know about Cancer Legal Care?
I want people to know is that our impact is real. We provide free legal services to people facing some of the most challenging times of their lives and we do it with respect, compassion, and by being generous with our time. Our team is not only really skilled but they are all genuinely kind and committed. We listen to people's stories and sit with the problem until we have a solution. There aren't any other organizations in our state doing this work and in the way we do it. I am so proud to be a part of Cancer Legal Care and who we are.
