Meet an Attorney

Brent, Staff Attorney

How long have you been practicing law?

I have practiced law in Minnesota for 25 years. Before coming to Cancer Legal Care, I worked with or for companies that created and administered health care benefits. My start with a Minnesota-based health care management company coincided with their effort to add health plans nationwide. I was involved in many parts of their growing business - writing plan documents, negotiating agreements with physicians and hospitals, resolving claim disputes, and managing benefit litigation.

I developed an interest in specialized health care and joined the company’s transplant division to help expand their centers of excellence network. I also worked to streamline access to legal services and make it easier to get legal review of documents and business practices.

I then started my own practice, offering custom contracting for clinically complex and financially catastrophic health events. I negotiated and drafted specific agreements for care rendered out-of-network.

I’ve now been at CLC for just over two years.

Why did you want to work for CLC?

A new challenge - a new opportunity.

My work at CLC allows me to apply my years of health care experience to patient-centric support. So, rather than advising health plans and insurance companies, I am helping patients and their families directly. This is an exciting new chapter in my legal career, and one that I thoroughly enjoy.

What's your favorite part of your job?

Delivering relief.

Having legal questions - and being afraid to ask a lawyer because of the stigma that lawyers are scary, hard to talk to, and expensive - only adds to the stress of having cancer. At CLC, you can talk to a lawyer one-on-one, you will get answers to your questions, and you won’t be charged. As a lawyer, there is nothing better than a client telling me that our conversation has relieved some of their stress.
