A message from Mark on Give to the Max Day

Bill Foley, CLC Health Insurance Advocate, Jane and Mark

Hello,

Every day, there are cancer patients' lives that are turned upside down because of legal problems. Every day, Cancer Legal Care helps these cancer patients with those legal problems. Free of charge. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t cost anything. They rely on your donations.

Your donations make stories like mine possible.

My Story

The hospital bill was for $155,493.30. I thought, “It’s got to be a mistake, right?”

First told to disregard it, then to appeal it with the insurance company, it wasn’t until I got a “Final Adverse Determination” from the insurance company that my wife and I got worried.

That’s when we called Cancer Legal Care.

I had gone to the doctor on a chilly December morning with some strange bruises. By the end of the day, I had been sent directly to the emergency room, diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, a rare and aggressive blood cancer, and told I’d be in the hospital for about a month, followed by about 8 months of outpatient chemo. Fortunately, it is highly curable and I'm in remission.

A couple of weeks into my hospitalization I developed a life-threatening condition and was transferred to a second hospital that had the specialized staff required to treat me. The insurance company used that transfer to deny the claim for my stay at the second hospital. It was ridiculous.

It was frustrating. It was a nightmare.

When we called Cancer Legal Care, their ICARE team, a team with deep experience in the insurance industry responded. Bill Foley stepped up to help.

Bill was convinced we would get this outrageous denial overturned. Over the following months, Bill helped us with four more appeals. All of which were denied.

My wife and I were devastated.

Bill and Cancer Legal Care were undeterred.

The appeal process was an emotional roller coaster. We would prepare an appeal, submit it, and wait weeks for a response, only to get a denial. The denials made no sense.

While we lost sleep and shed tears,

Bill was there, reassuring us that this would all work out.

I realized early on that Bill was operating at a completely different level than I was. Bill, like a chess grandmaster, was strategically planning for the next 4 or 5 moves.

He knew the insurance industry.

He had a treasure trove of tools in his arsenal. He was tenacious.

At one point, I called an employer-provided claim reconciliation service and quickly exhausted their abilities. When I shared this with Bill, he quickly replied, “One thing I can assure you is we won't give up as easily as [they] did.”

He’ll never know how reassuring that was.

Bill and Cancer Legal Care were going to be with us to the end.

After exhausting all the appeals, Bill suggested we speak with a reporter he knew from a local newspaper. Within 72 hours of speaking with the reporter, and the reporter starting to ask questions, the insurance company had deemed my claim to be medically necessary. Hallelujah! Our insurance nightmare was coming to an end!

What if the reporter’s questions hadn’t reversed the insurance company’s decision?

Bill and Cancer Legal Care would still be fighting on our behalf.
